Bisleri | Tata buys Bislery for ₹7,000 crore, new king of ‘packaged water’ industry
Tata Group is going to buy Bisleri, the country’s largest and largest company that supplies and sells packaged drinking water.
Owner Ramesh Chauhan has decided to sell Bisleri International Company and Tata Consumer Products Company, a subsidiary of Tata Sons, has decided to sell. It is said that Tata group will buy the Bisleri company for Rs 6,000 to 7,000 crore.
As part of the agreement, the current administration will continue for two years. The 82-year-old Chauhan, who has been facing several health problems in recent times, does not have a capable successor to take Bislery to the next level. Chauhan himself had once said that his daughter Jayanthi is not much interested in business. So now they have decided to sell the company to Tata.
The Tata Group ‘nurtures and cares for it even better’. However, Chauhan said the sale of Bislery was a “painful” decision. “I like the Tata culture of values and integrity. “Despite the aggressiveness shown by other buyers, I have made up my mind to sell to Tata,” he said.
Several companies, including Reliance Retail, Nestlé and Danone, had previously wooed Bisleri. But in the end the company is becoming Tata Group.
Chauhan who sold Thums Up 3 decades ago
This same Ramesh Chauhan and his brother Prakash Chauhan had jointly sold many soft drink brands to Coca Cola in 1993. These included Thums Up, Gold Spot, Citra, Maja, Rimzim and Limca. Now after 3 decades Bisleri has decided to sell.
Tata’s aggressive move
The Tata Group is making aggressive moves in the fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) segment and aims to be among the top three in the sector. It also sells packaged mineral water under the Himalayan brand, Tata Copper Plus Water and Tata Gluco+. Now, with the purchase of Bisleri, it will suddenly rise to the No.1 position in the packaged water sales segment.
